Last weekend, on Saturday, June 21st, the first day of
summer, the Traveling Jewburys lent our support to the annual Make Music
New York solstice celebration. We played
outdoor street corner gigs in front of a public library on City Island in the
Bronx, and in front of a city bus stop near Bliss Street Station in Sunnyside,
Queens.
Against the backdrop of World Cup matches and a gorgeous
day, the TJs joined a roster of some 1,300 artists and bands playing free shows
throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
The two neighborhoods we played could not have been more different from
each other, but the friendly crowds in both locations were enthusiastic and
generous, and we met some wonderful folks along the way. Most were people who encountered us while
going about their normal Saturday routines, and stayed to join the fun. Nothing beats the thrill of having complete
strangers warm up to the TJs and groove to our good-time music.
In its eighth year, Make Music New York is a unique solstice festival of free shows in public spaces throughout the City. MMNY takes place simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 700+ cities around the world — a global celebration of music making. Completely different from a typical music festival. The TJs look forward to participating in the MMNY schedule again next year, and hope that you’ll come along and join us!
